Why did you choose this project?
I always to know if the bed of nails was a magic trick or not.
What did you enjoy most about the project?
I enjoyed working with my dad and coming up with ideas of how we might do an experiment
What have you learned from the project?
I have learned that the bed of nails trick is not magic, but simple science. The reason people can do it is because their weight is spread over thousands of nails. I also learned how to use imovie.
How did your parent or mentor help you?
My Dad helped me with thinking of ideas of what to do, and he helped with filming and building the equipment. He also showed me how to use imovie to put the film together.
For the intermediate age group (9-12): briefly explain the underlying scientific theories behind the project, why you chose this method and equipment, and whether the experiment is repeatable and why?
The bed of nails trick doesn't hurt because the person's weight is spread out over thousands of nails. If the person's weight was put on one nail, the nail would go straight through the skin.
We chose the experiment with the balloons because we had all the stuff to build it in the shed. Also because it was easy to measure the weights this way.
Anyone could repeat this experiment by building the same equipment.
