Why did you choose this project?
I chose this project because it looked like lots of fun and I enjoyed finding out how a lolly I often eat, reacts with soft drinks that I like.
What did you enjoy most about the project?
The thing I enjoyed most about the project was watching the explosions and having my two best friends to help me with the experiment. It was awesome!!!!
What have you learned from the project?
I learned that there is only one type of Mentos (mint flavour), that can help the explosion take place because of it's 'moon-like' surface, which traps carbon dioxide. I also learned that Diet Coke contains a higher level of carbon dioxide in it than other soft drinks, because it had the greatest chemical reaction, resulting in the largest explosion. Lastly I learned how to make a short movie which I have never done before.
How did your parent or mentor help you?
Both of my parents helped me with this challenge. Firstly with all of the learning of the science and in researching how to set up the experiment. Also they helped me to organise the materials I needed for this experiment.
For the intermediate age group (9-12): briefly explain the underlying scientific theories behind the project.
We chose Mint Mentos because it was the only tuype of Mentos with a moon-like' surface. This meant that it had craters and crevasses all over it's surface. When I dropped each Mentos into the different soft drinks, it formed a line of bubbles the whole way down to the bottom of the bottle. This is where the explosion took place.
